Chagossians fucked over once again...

In deeply disappointing news, it has been confirmed that, yes, British justice and foreign policy matters continue to be controlled by the United States government.

In all seriousness, the 3-2 decision of the Law Lords to deny the Chagossians repatriation because the British government feel £25 million pounds is, in the grand scheme of things, too costly a sum to pay for repatriation of the islanders, and the Americans belief that the repatriated islanders on the outlier Chagos Islands would constitute a security hazard to their base on Diego Garcia - even making it a potential terrorist haven - is a frankly disgraceful decision.

One hopes that the Chagossians will be successful on appeal - however, given as they actually won the right to return last year, prompting this Government appeal, one is also realistic enough to realise this will never happen.

The full ruling by the Law Lords is available here. Props to Lords Bingham and Mance for their principled opposition to the Government.
