Reports in today's Grauniad that John McCain has reined in the negative personal attacks against Barack Obama would be welcomed were it not for his continuing ability to undermine his good works with the sort of amateurish blunder so often associated with the soon-to-be-ex President Dubya.
While one must applaud his defences of Obama in recent Republican town hall meetings, reported in the linked article above, against some rather dumb comments from members of the public, the (spit) Fox News website (spit) reports that McCain yesterday vowed, in front of volunteer members of his campaign team, to "whip" Obama's "you know what" in Wednesday's last televised debate before Americans go to the polls.
Coming on the back of his clunking referral to Obama as 'that one' in the last televised debate, it would seem that McCain's desire to appear 'straight talking' has blown up in his face due to his injudicious language choices when talking about his opponent.
I do not believe for one moment that John McCain is racist; however, his obvious antipathy towards his opponent clouds his judgement. Allied to inflammatory language used by the Embarracuda (a.k.a. running mate Sarah Palin), it is little wonder that McCain finds himself, with respect to his goals, in the frankly ridiculous position of having to defend his opponent against slurs put forth by those people he needs to vote for him.
That is why Obama, thus far, has been able to be so relatively bland since he won the Democrat nomination. The GOP are doing his work for him - dismantling their own position by using negative attacks in an environment where the sideshow of shit-slinging is not distracting voters, for once, from real issues.
