From a British perspective, I've seen 'Obamania' before in 1997 when Tony Blair became PM. And I know the gross disappointment he turned out to be, at least to left-wingers like me.

When people argue Obama is a consummate politician, I can agree with that. But what some tend to forget is that consummate politicians' first goal is re-election, and that means, once in situ, playing nice with business despite their gross negligence, incompetence and excess.

I was prepared for Obama to not be ‘all that’. After 8 years of darkness, he would have so much cleaning up to do that dramatic change and rapid reconstruction was never going to happen. But, a few dramatic gestures aside, I don’t see any effort for radical change. I don’t see anyone trying to build momentum. And before we know it, the mid-terms will be upon us and nothing much will have changed other than the wallpaper in the staffers’ offices.

Nice analysis of the presidential debate. The McCain campaign is simply falling apart right now so I'm surprised Obama doesn't have an even larger lead in the polls. Like you say, the gap that is there is more due to the Republican's collapse rather than some sort or knock out by the Democrat.

As I watched the debate it looked as if Obama was playing it safe (which is understandable to a point) while getting at McCain on a couple of occasions. I particularly liked when Obama responded to McCain's attack that he's inexperienced and not responsible enough because of his stance on Pakistan by pointing out McCain was the one who joked about bomb-bomb-bombing Iran and called for the annihilation of N. Korea.

But his best moment was a similar response to the issue of inexperience where he admitted he didn't get it.

In the end though Obama held back and didn't finish his opponent off they way he seemed he could have. God it's hard not to use fighting metaphors when talking about these things.

Now that's an investment strategy I can believe in...

Pity nobody is thinking about the sick and the disabled, but hell we are only animals. I forgot.

I had a hell of an accident at work, I'm still in my Union the GMB last year I was on TV doing my bit for Remploy factories, standing up for the 136 lads who lost their jobs at the closure of the factory by me, Labour stated that these people would be found work and that this was a Labour party promise one year on and not one of those people have found a job.

Now we have Purnels new welfare reforms green paper and I spoke to my Union who said that a deal has been struck to ensure everyone who is sick or disabled will be found real jobs.

I wonder myself how many deals have been done behind our backs with both Labour and the Tories to remove the Welfare state.

Fuck Labour and the Unions and after 44 years as a shop steward I've seen a few deals struck in my time, but this beats the lot.

Great post. And what we are now hearing from corporate and government officials is fear of the dreaded "wage-price spiral." It's a classic way to blame the victims of inflation (public and private sector workers) for the very inflation they are trying to address.

It's an interesting but unsurprising situation. At a time when corporate CEOs, financial managers and speculators have sent the global economy reeling out of control - during which time governments sat back complacent or actively cheered on the process - workers seeking a better shake are the first blamed. Where were the regulators when Equitable Life executives falsified their earnings to justify huge bonuses and pay rises that dwarf what the public sector strikers are fighting for? There were no solemn warnings by government officials of a wage-price spiral when these and other robber barons cheated and lied their way into this current financial crisis, even though billions of tax payer funds will be used to remedy their actions. When were CEOs told to "maintain discipline" and accept lower pay for the good of the economy as Alistair Darling recently urged public workers to do? But will these corporate criminals be held to account? Don't hold your breath on it.
